Decade for Biodiversity

I talked about that few weeks ago. The United Nations Decade on Biodiversity is a program to support the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity... The slogan? "Live in harmony with nature"!
But I wanted to learn more. So I asked few questions to David Ainsworth, Information Officer at the Convention for Biological Diversity (working in Montréal).

How many people are working on this project?

The United Nation Decade on Biodiversity (UNDB) Team at the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity counts 3 full-time staff working on the UNDB campaign, in addition to parallel projects. Another 2-3 staff are supporting the campaign during certain periods of time. This said, all the staff at the Secretariat work in line with and toward implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, which is the basis of the Decade.

The work on the ground however is done by the 193 Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (and hopefully non-Parties as well), who support and implement the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity at the national level. Among those: different levels of government, businesses and individuals. Everyone needs to do their part and take effective and urgent action now to halt the loss of biodiversity.

What can people do to participate to the Decade?

The key word here is “do”. The best thing that people can do is to get informed about the effects of their current lifestyle and behaviours, and then DO something to make a positive change. Nowadays, there are countless sources of inspiration/information easily available and specific to everyone’s needs and living conditions. One simple way to start is by doing simple actions, such as suggested in the booklet “52 tips for biodiversity” (available in 27 languages). The first step is realizing our own impact on our surrounding ecosystems and on the distant ones as well. The next step is to raise awareness with your family, neighbourhood, community etc. and get them to act too. Imagine the exponential positive change if everyone did it!

Also, a simple way to show your support is by joining our facebook page.

Is there a lot of partners?

To date, the United Nations Decade on Biodiversity counts 115 Partners, but we are working with many others on implementing the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity. All the countries that agreed to the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity, have also agreed to celebrate the Decade and we look forward to more exciting announcements as the decade unfolds.

Maria-Elisa suggested me to talk about My World 2015... And for it's an United Nations initiative, today is the good day to do it!

"The United Nations and partners want to hear from YOU! MY World is a global survey asking you to choose your priorities for a better world. Results will be shared with world leaders in setting the next global development agenda.
Tell us about the world you want, because your voice matters."

You have ont thing let to do: answer!

And if you have ideas, topics for seedbomb.net, like Maria-Elisa did, you are always welcome!
